Drivers reveal their spooky stories
One in seven car and van drivers say they have seen a ghost on the road. Here are some of their scariest stories.
This Halloween, these are some of the most chilling ghost encounters on UK roads, including spooky tales originally unearthed by Select Car Leasing.
The Girl in the Nightdress (Lincolnshire)
A family was driving along the A15 heading south from Lincoln when they spotted a young girl - between 6-8 years old - looking ‘thin and forlorn’ and wearing a nightie at the side of the road.
As they looked more closely, they realised she was transparent and floating along the pavement, staying in front of the car even though they were travelling at 30mph.
She kept pace with them, until she suddenly vanished.
The Man with the Gladstone Bag (Devon)
Two friends were driving across Woodbury Common in Devon on the B3180 towards Ottery St Mary.
As they approached a pub on their left, the Halfway Inn, they watched in horror as a man stepped into the road, right into the path of their car.
The driver and passenger said he was wearing a black top hat, black frock coat, and he was carrying a Gladstone bag.
The man turned his head to look straight at them, although his normal-looking face seemed blank and unaware of the presence of the car. The driver slammed on the brakes, but couldn’t stop in time - then the car went straight through the apparition.
They looked behind the car and under the car using torches but found nothing.
A week later the driver went back to the pub and spoke to the landlord, who said other people had reported similar experiences.
Locals thought it was the ghost of a doctor who attended a birth at the inn, but was run over and killed by a horse and carriage as he left.
The Talking Phantom Hitchhiker (Merseyside)
A man was driving along the coastal road between Ainsdale and Southport, Merseyside when he spotted a hitchhiker standing on the side of the road.
He stopped and offered the man a lift. He was wearing a coat, but was soaking wet and wasn’t carrying any bags.
He was quietly spoken, with a local Southport accent and asked if he could bring his girlfriend.
The hitchhiker stepped away from the car, then when the driver looked around, he had disappeared, despite having nowhere to go, as the remote road was bordered by high hills.
The Ruskington Horror (Lincolnshire)
Kevin Whelan told ITVs Richard Madeley of a scary experience on the A15 between Lincoln and Sleaford.
He was driving at around 60mph and as he approached a turn-off on his left for Ruskington, he spotted something ‘floating’ in front of him and assumed it was a large white bin-bag.
As he got closer, a face appeared near the car’s front pillar and the apparition raised its left hand. The driver said it had a pitted face, dark hair, olive-green skin and the driver could even see its teeth.
The ‘horror’ then faded away down the side of the car.
The distraught driver was left in tears as he told his wife what had happened.
